Desk stretches you can do at work
You do not need a mat or a change of clothes. These five moves work in an office chair and take about five minutes in total. Do them whenever you notice stiffness building up.
Shoulder rolls

- Stand or sit tall with your arms relaxed.
- Lift your shoulders toward your ears, then roll them back and down in a big circle.
- After half the reps, reverse the direction.
Dose: 8 repetitions.
Tip: Keep your jaw soft and breathe out as your shoulders drop.
Neck side stretch

- Sit tall and let both shoulders drop away from your ears.
- Tilt your right ear toward your right shoulder until you feel a gentle stretch.
- Breathe slowly, then switch sides.
Dose: Hold for 20 seconds per side.
Tip: Do not pull on your head. Let its weight do the work.
Cross-body shoulder stretch

- Bring your right arm across your chest at shoulder height.
- Hold it just above the elbow with your left forearm and draw it gently closer.
- Keep both shoulders low, then switch sides.
Dose: Hold for 20 seconds per side.
Tip: Pull the arm across, not up. Do not twist your torso.
Chair back opener

- Sit on a sturdy chair with your upper back against the top of the backrest.
- Clasp your hands behind your head to support your neck.
- Gently lean back over the backrest, then come up.
Dose: 6 repetitions.
Tip: Lean only as far as feels good. Keep your ribs from flaring.
Seated spinal twist

- Sit tall near the front of a chair with your feet flat.
- Cross your arms over your chest and rotate gently to the right, keeping your hips still.
- Hold for 3 seconds, return, then rotate to the left.
Dose: 6 repetitions.
Tip: Rotate from your middle back and keep your hips still.
Common mistakes
- Staying in one position all day and stretching once. Short, frequent breaks work better.
- Bouncing or forcing a stretch. Keep every move slow and mild.
- Holding your breath. Breathe out as you ease into each move.
- Using a wobbly chair. Choose a sturdy one without wheels for the chair opener, or stand.
Set a reminder every 45 to 60 minutes and do one or two moves, not all five.
When to stop and see a professional
Stop and speak to a doctor or physiotherapist if you notice:
- numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm, hand, leg or foot
- pain that spreads (radiates) down an arm or leg
- pain that started after an accident, fall or other injury
- loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness between your legs (seek emergency care)
- pain that keeps getting worse, wakes you at night, or comes with fever or unexplained weight loss
