Shoulder shrug exercise for neck and shoulder tension
The shoulder shrug and release is a one-minute move for the tight spot between your neck and shoulders. You lift both shoulders toward your ears, hold for a moment, then let them drop. It takes about 30 seconds and needs no equipment, so it fits between emails or video calls. In the Mo app it is 8 reps, and it is the first move in the Neck SOS and tension headache routines.
It will not fix a stiff neck on its own. Guidance on neck pain generally recommends staying active and moving regularly, and short movement breaks are an easy way to do that.
How to do it
- Sit or stand tall with your arms hanging loosely.
- Breathe in and lift both shoulders toward your ears. Hold for 2 seconds.
- Breathe out and let them drop heavily.
Dose: about 8 reps.
Tip: Let the release be big and floppy. That is where the relief is.
Common mistakes
- Holding your breath. Breathe in as you lift and out as you drop.
- Letting the shoulders sink back down slowly. Let them fall.
- Lifting so hard that your neck strains. Lift only as far as feels comfortable.
- Pushing into pain. Ease off or stop.
Easier options
- Lift only halfway and skip the 2-second hold.
- Do 3 to 4 reps and rest, then repeat.
- Start with shoulder rolls if shrugging feels too tense.
This matches the Shrug and Release exercise in the Mo app.
When to stop and see a professional
Stop and speak to a doctor or physiotherapist if you notice:
- numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or hand
- pain that spreads down an arm
- pain that started after an accident, fall or other injury
- chest pain or shortness of breath (seek emergency care)
- pain that keeps getting worse, wakes you at night, or comes with fever or unexplained weight loss
If shrugging causes sharp pain in your neck or shoulder, stop and try the neck side stretch or shoulder blade squeeze guide instead, or ask a professional.
