Cross-body shoulder stretch: how to do it
The cross-body shoulder stretch is a simple hold: you draw one arm across your chest and keep your shoulders low. It takes about 40 seconds and needs no equipment, so it fits between emails or video calls.
It will not fix back pain on its own. Guidance on neck and back pain generally recommends staying active and moving regularly, and short movement breaks are an easy way to do that.
How to do it
- Bring your right arm across your chest at shoulder height.
- Hold it just above the elbow with your left forearm and draw it gently closer.
- Keep both shoulders low, then switch sides.
Dose: hold 20 seconds on each side.
Tip: Pull the arm across, not up. Do not twist your torso.
Common mistakes
- Pulling the arm up toward your chin. Pull it across, at shoulder height.
- Twisting the torso. Face forward and keep your chest still.
- Shrugging the shoulders. Keep both shoulders low.
- Holding your breath. Breathe slowly.
- Pushing into pain. Ease off or stop.
Easier options
- Hold for 10 seconds instead of 20.
- Draw the arm across only part of the way.
- Do it seated if standing feels unsteady.

When to stop and see a professional
Stop and speak to a doctor or physiotherapist if you notice:
- numbness, tingling or weakness in an arm or hand
- pain that spreads down an arm
- pain that started after an accident, fall or other injury
- chest pain or shortness of breath (seek emergency care)
- pain that keeps getting worse, wakes you at night, or comes with fever or unexplained weight loss
If the stretch causes sharp pain in your shoulder, stop and try the shoulder rolls guide instead, or ask a professional.
